College of Education launches new program for students with intellectual disabilities

5/22/2013 A door to a new educational option has been opened for students with developmental and intellectual disabilities as a result of a recent $100,000 grant awarded to Lipscomb University’s College of Education (COE) from the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities. This summer, the College of Education will launch IDEAL (Igniting the Dream of Education and Access at Lipscomb), a program that will offer a two-year academic certificate experience to an initial cohort of up to six students with intellectual disabilities. Classes will begin January 2014. Lipscomb is the first Christian university in Tennessee to offer such a program.

5/18/2013 Lipscomb Athletic Director Philip Hutcheson announced May 18 that Nashville native Casey Alexander has been hired as the 18th head coach of the Lipscomb University men’s basketball program. Bringing 18 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience in the Atlantic Sun Conference to the storied Bison program, Alexander takes over the reins of the Lipscomb program after a two-year stint at Stetson University, where he led the Hatters to a third-place finish in the A-Sun standings.

5/14/2013 Patty Landon Dugger had quite a reputation at one time in the Tennessee Governor’s office. No, she didn’t have a reputation as a dissatisfied constituent or a lobbyist. Rather, she was legendary for training the best office administrators in the area. Today, the Lipscomb community is mourning the loss of Dugger, longtime business faculty member and director of the Lifelong Learning Program, who died May 13 at the age of 80 following a lengthy illness.

5/14/2013 The Lipscomb track and field teams set new marks for most points and best finishes at an Atlantic Sun Conference Championship meet on May 11 in Jacksonville, Fla. The men’s squad placed third overall with 145 points. The Lady Bisons placed fourth overall with 98 points.

5/10/2013 It is common knowledge that the textbook is standard equipment for any college course. But, it’s not very often that students get to set aside the textbook and learn directly from the textbook author. Gerald Corey, professor emeritus of human services at California State University, Fullerton, and author of 16 psychology textbooks, visited the Lipscomb University campus this past semester to hold a weeklong seminar in group therapy for counseling graduate students.

5/10/2013 Figuring out how things work and are built have fascinated Bob Ewing for nearly a century. A native of Salem, Ore., Bob parlayed that fascination into a career as a civil engineer who had an impact across the country. His contribution to the engineering field was recently recognized with the establishment of the Robert Clark Ewing Engineering Scholarship Fund.

5/8/2013 The 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championship began Wednesday as North Florida, USC Upstate, FGCU, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State and Stetson have staked their claims to the tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The A-Sun Championship starts on Wednesday, May 8 with No. 6 Stetson facing No. 3 FGCU in the first game at 3 p.m. CST followed by No. 4 Lipscomb taking on No. 5 Kennesaw State at 5:30 p.m. CST at Lipscomb's Draper Diamond.

University celebrates largest graduating class in history

5/7/2013 The Lipscomb community marked another milestone this spring as more than 659 graduates were honored for completing coursework in May or August 2013. For the eighth consecutive year, more students than ever before participated in commencement, held May 4 in Allen Arena. During the ceremony, 385 undergraduates, 216 graduates and 68 doctors of pharmacy graduates were recognized. Included in this year’s graduating class were 35 veterans who were part of the university’s Yellow Ribbon Program as well as the first students to graduate with a Master of Science degree in biomolecular science.

5/6/2013 Social media use has grown dramatically among internet users ages 50 and older, according to a recent Pew Research Center report. The study indicates that social networking use by this segment of the population has nearly doubled in the past year. During the same period, use among those ages 65 and older grew 100 percent. By comparison, social networking use among users ages 18 to 29 grew 13 percent. However, social networking products and services are often not designed with users 50 and older in mind.

He represents the latest generation of Lipscombs born since 1891 when David Lipscomb, along with James A. Harding, established Nashville Bible School, known today as Lipscomb University.

5/1/2013 Lipscomb University’s Nelson and Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership was recognized for its collaborative Transit Citizen Leadership Academy (TCLA) as it received a 2013 Regional Thinking and Action Award from Cumberland Region Tomorrow earlier today in a ceremony during the POWER OF TEN Regional Summit in Nashville. The TCLA is a partnership between the Andrews Institute and the Transit Alliance of Middle Tennessee.

Lipscomb Academy Elementary School was named a 2013 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, announced U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Chair of White House Council on Environmental Quality Nancy Sutley, and Acting Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency Bob Persiacepe.

Lipscomb Academy dedicates new Griffith Family Soccer Field and Complex

5/1/2013 Lipscomb Academy students have a new home for the middle and high school soccer programs thanks to the generosity of Jim and Pam Griffith of Canton, Ohio. On Friday, April 26, the Griffith Family Soccer Field and Complex — known to students as The Griff — was officially dedicated and opened for use by the boys’ and girls’ soccer programs at the academy. The complex includes a competition soccer field with lighting, a practice field, home and visitor locker rooms, public restrooms and a concession stand. It is located on the west side of Franklin Road just past the intersection with Caldwell Lane.

4/29/2013 Camouflage and duck calls were prevalent at the Fifth Annual Don Meyer Evening of Excellence hosted by Lipscomb Athletics. More than 15,000 packed Allen Arena during three programs held April 26 and 27 to see Phil, Kay and Si Robertson, stars of the A&E reality show Duck Dynasty, and to hear an inspirational message by former Bison men’s basketball coach Don Meyer.
