February is Black History Month!

In 1924 the fraternity, Omega Psi Phi "Negro Literature and History Week" in response to a challenge by Carter G. Woodson, the creator of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. This was expanded to "Negro History Week" in 1926 in an effort to remember those who have aided the person of color in attaining their civil rights. Mr. Woodson chose the second week of February because it holds the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

The first Black History Month was initiated in 1976 by the Association. Since then every U.S. President has issued Black History Month proclamations.
