This team will work alongside the ministry of Made in the Streets, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The first team was comprised of members of the Alpha Phi Chi men's service club begun in November 2011, when Alpha Phi Chi raised several thousand dollars for the ministry through Anteater's Ball, its annual variety show. Club members decided that raising money to support the ministry was just the beginning; team members followed it up with firsthand interaction and service at the MITS campus. Today, this trip is a combined effort with the Otter Creek Church of Christ, open to all. This year, participants will have three options for the trip: traveling for one of two 2-week blocks, or for the duration of all four weeks.
The work of Made in the Streets begins by seeking out and finding kids just as they are, and offering them a new life free from glue, drugs, stealing and hunger. Their team is trained to take first aid, friendship, Bible study, food, sports, counseling, and the opportunity to go to a skills training school - all the things needed by children who are sleeping on the streets. The team will provide assistance to the day-to-day efforts of those who have devoted their lives to this work, doing whatever they can to help out while also utilizing the skill sets and passions of team members.
