For many years now, Lipscomb has sent out a medical mission team to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. A total of thirty-five people including pre-med students (who gained lots of practical experience), Spanish students (who were invaluable as translators), doctors, pharmacists, and other medical professionals spend a week attending to 1,586 patients and distributing over 6,000 prescriptions in different clinics, as well as in a nursing home and two orphanages.
Not only does the team administer to the Hondurans' physical needs, but their spiritual needs as well. The team prepares and teaches around twenty bible stories to children, passes out bibles and bible literature, invites many to worship, and holds devotionals in over 50 individual homes where the team delivers food packets of rice, beans, oil, pasta, and other staples. In the evenings we have students preach the gospel alongside our Honduran counterparts, perform skits, and teach classes.
The team also throws a party and teaches Bible lessons to children at two orphanages. We have the opportunity to take out a group of children for an entire day and give them the one-on-one attention that they desperately need and deserve. By taking personal items to a nursing home, students help feed the sick and show them love.
It is difficult to analyze the spiritual impact we have on the Hondurans as the continuing evangelism belongs to the Iglesia de Cristo del Pedregal. However, with what success that this trip has had year after year, we can only believe that God powerfully operates in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Honduras. We can safely say that the impact of servanthood in their community has deeply blessed our lives, and we gain through permanent friendships far more than we could imagine.
