An Unexpected Gift

match1Each summer, Lipscomb University welcomes thousands of people from all over the nation who fill up campus for a time of fellowship, study, and inspiration. Summer Celebration is packed with engaging speakers, film screenings, challenging classes and stirring times of worship - not to mention some exciting fireworks! These are just some of the reasons why people flock to the University in late June every year.

The theme of this year’s lectureship was “Reviving the Mission”, focusing on the book of Jacob. It just so happens, as far as Lipscomb Missions is concerned, it turned out to be a great name for this year’s event! During the final program of the conference, a special opportunity was given to learn about and give to Lipscomb Missions, and it was revealed that an anonymous donor had pledged a $15,000 match! Prompted by Walt Leaver, Vice President for University Relations, the crowd immediately rose to the challenge, donating nearly $13,000 in a matter of minutes specifically for the ministry of Lipscomb Missions. Just a few days later, with additional online pledges and mailed checks, the $15,000 match goal was met.

“This really is such a blessing to a program like Lipscomb Missions”, says Mark Jent, Director of Missions Outreach. “Unlike most programs on campus, we rely solely on individuals, churches and foundations to help fund our operations budget match3through the year, which keeps our cost to the students as low as possible. These donations, and the generous anonymous matching gift, go a long way to financially energizing our program for the year. It absolutely makes student involvement, leadership training, and program expansion possible that wouldn’t be, otherwise”.

When asked why it made sense for Summer Celebration to give Lipscomb Missions such a wonderful platform, Walt Leaver responded “Lipscomb Missions is exactly the kind of thing that people who come to Summer Celebration really get excited about. These people are really the core of our dedicated alumni and supportive local community, and we felt like introducing them to Lipscomb Missions during this event was a great fit, because the program really goes to the heart of what Lipscomb’s all about”. Says Leaver, “We’re very, very thankful for and encouraged by the generous response of our Summer Celebration participants, but truthfully, it’s not all that surprising. This overwhelming support is just one more indication that our community really cares about the way we are forming and preparing students for service to the Kingdom.”
