Course Listings

  • Ancient Civilizations and World History
    This course includes an overview of ancient world civilizations.  Students study ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, India, Rome, Arabia, Russia, China and Japan, as well as the modern history of these regions.  In addition to these ancient civilizations this course also includes the study of other pivotal periods in world history such as the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Scientific, Industrial, and French Revolutions.  
  • Band
    6th grade is the entry point for the beginning study of a brass or woodwind instrument at Lipscomb Academy. With the guidance of Mr. Hicks, students choose an instrument and learn fundamental skills in tone production, facility with the instrument, music literacy, rhythmic accuracy and expression. The 6th Grade Beginning Band performs each year in the Christmas concert and the end of the year Spring concert.
  • Bible
    The 6th grade Bible course includes a study of several Biblical books. In the fall students are taken through a study of the kings of Israel and Judah (I & II Kings) with emphasis on God's desire for covenant with His people and His willingness to let them decide to accept or deny His role in their lives. In the Spring, students continue the story of God's faithfulness with Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah. The highlight of the Spring is studying the life of Christ through the eyes of John with a complete study of his gospel. Here the students are led to understand God's plan for them in His story, His desire to give abundant life to all who so choose.The year wraps up with Philippians. Proverbs is also often used as a fill in throughout the year.
  • Chorus
    The 6th Grade Choral Curriculum is based on learning to sing 2-part treble, 3-part treble music in a variety of styles and languages. These choruses are “Experiential” in nature so that each student has the opportunity to performing in a choral ensemble. Curriculum includes reviewing and learning the Music Basics and music symbols, sight-reading simple rhythms and melodies, solfedge, being introduced to singing harmony, understanding how to follow choral music, and a cross-curricular study with Social Studies in Medieval Era music and World Music. These choruses perform for parents each 9 weeks, at Christmas, the MTVA Mass Choral Festival for 4th-6th grade, 6th Grade Medieval Night, in Chapel, and at “Evening with the Arts.”  
  • English
    The grammar/writing curriculum for the sixth grade includes the following chapters: sentences, capitalization, punctuation, eight parts of speech, phrases and clauses, complements, subject/verb agreement, and diagramming. Grammar skills are practiced, reinforced, and improved in both formal and creative writing activities as well as writing applications that are included at the end of each chapter. The ERB Writing Practice Program is used to teach, practice, and reinforce writing skills while preparing students to participate in the ERB writing assessment. Narrative and descriptive writing skills are the main emphasis of our formal writing. In addition to major writing pieces, students write business and friendly letters, journal entries including entries for Camp Cosby scrapbooks, and research. Some assignments in writing are coordinated with content from other sixth grade subject areas. Students participate in one formal writing contest each year. The goal for the student is to define good writing and identify strengths and weaknesses in his own writing as well as in others.
  • Math
    The 6th grade math course is designed to prepare students for future success in all areas of mathematics.  The Saxon math textbook is used and emphasizes continuous review of topics previously studied.  A broad range of topics are covered throughout the year, including: whole number concepts, operations with fractions decimals and percents, place value, measurement, geometry, ratio and proportions and negative numbers.  The class is designed to introduce a new concept each day and practice it.  Then students are assigned problems that practice the new skill as well as review past skills.
  • Physical Education (PE)
    For the younger middle school grades, Physical Education at David Lipscomb focuses on a variety of team sports.  We stress the concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship as the students compete with each other.
  • Reading/Spelling
    The spelling portion of this class is taught using the Vocabulary Workshop workbook, which emphasizes vocabulary fundamentals as well as critical thinking skills. Many questions in this workbook are presented in a standardized test format, thus providing our students with challenging practice in this area. There is a helpful on-line component to this curriculum, as well. In reading classes our students are exposed to a curriculum which includes a concentrated focus on state standards. Novel/textbook units include writing activities and class discussions based on the critical thinking skills included in those standards. The novels we currently read are the following: selections from The Chronicles of Narnia, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, and The Bronze Bow. Crispin: The Cross of Lead coordinates with the sixth grade study of the Middle Ages, and The Bronze Bow coordinates with our study of the Gospel of John. Completing a quarterly assignment in Accelerated Reader is a requirement, and it is also a way in which our best readers are challenged and encouraged.
  • Science
    A variety of hands-on labs and activities are utilized as 6th graders discover their Earth and universe in 6th grade science. Subject matter in the fall includes the study of minerals, rocks, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Spring subject matter covers astronomy, weather, and climate. Troughout the year critical thinking is emphasized as well as skills such as interpreting graphics.
  • Visual Art
    Student's projects will guide them through the principles of design including balance, pattern, proportion, and more. Each project will highlight new avenues "types" of art to the students. Students will create a portrait, a radial design composition, a printmaking project, and learn perspective. The main goal will be to provide an opportunity for students to create art that they can take pride in while using their own ideas and draw inspiration from their own lives.
