Lipscomb Academy Basketball Camp – Camp #1

Open to male and female students entering the 3rd-8th grade
This Basketball camp experience held in Lipscomb High School’s gyms will provide coaching on the fundamentals of basketball in a fun and encouraging environment. Campers will be taught fundamental skills in shooting, passing and receiving, dribbling, screening, defensive principes, and team play. Campers will participate in full and half court games, receive a camp t-shirt, and be eligible for contests and prizes. The camp will be directed by Lipscomb Middle School basketball coach Gary Waller who has years of experience running successful basketball camps. Smoky Mountain Fly-Fishing

Open to boys entering the 8th and rising 9th graders
After a 1 day introductory fly-fishing class at Lipscomb Academy, instructors will take a group of 6-10 young men to the Smoky Mountains National Park for a 2-night camping trip filled with fly-fishing, fellowship, and food. The group will stay at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and spend the majority of the stay fishing the Little River, which runs through the campground. This experience will be led by Mr. Adam Abood and one other male leader. For more info email adam.abood@lipscomb.edu .

Learn to use Apple's user-friendly music writing program, Garage Band. We will play around with how to create interesting beats, melodies and harmonies. We will also record our own voices over karaoke tracks and original songs and make CD's for the world to hear the next big star. This course will be taught by Lipscomb Academy Middle School Choral Director Elizabeth Harrell.
Mock Trial
June 17-June21 12:30-3:30 $150
Open to students entering the 8th and 9th grades
It’s the trial of the century (or, at least, the summer)! In this interactive, challenging course, students will participate in a full civil or criminal trial. Some students will be witnesses and jurors, attorneys, or the judge. All students will investigate the unfortunate events that led to the trial, examine the evidence at hand, and help determine the outcome of the trial. Apart from an intriguing and fun experience, the course will teach students the basics of the American legal system and introduce them to the complex and difficult decisions faced when one seeks both truth and justice. Students will prepare for the trial and learn legal procedures throughout the week and then participate in the trial on Friday. The course will be taught by Dr. Andrew Polk, a historian who teaches at both Lipscomb Academy High School and in the Department of History, Politics, and Philosophy at Lipscomb University

Combine your love of sports and competition with applying common math concepts of fractions, ratios, proportions, percents, charts, and graphs. Students will enjoy active participation in applying these math concepts. Sample activities include free-throw competition and a whiffle ball game. Students will track their results and apply math concepts to chart their progress. This class will help build real-life math applications. This class will be taught by Lipscomb Acdemy 6th grade math teacher and middle school football coach Josh Weber.

This will be a week long camp that focuses on making running fun. The students will participate in different relays, games and activities that incorporate physical fitness and teamwork. Regardless of fitness level, this camp will allow every student opportunities to be active and have a fun week! The cost of the course includes a daily snack for each student. The course will be taught by Lipscomb Academy High School Cross Country coach Albert Thweatt.

Whether you've had your iPad for a while or you just bought one, this course will show you how to get the most out of your iPad. The course will go over basic features of the the iPad while demonstrating how to use these features so that you get the most out of your device. From connecting your calenders, emails and reminders to finding apps to help you enhance the use of your ipad in school this course is sure to help you get more out of our iPad. We will download free apps that teachers will want you to have so that you can get a headstart on using them on your own. Whether you attend Lipscomb Academy or just want to get more out of your iPad use this course will have something to help you. Course will be taught by Lipscomb Academy Middle School social studies teacher Franklin Bennett. Mr. Bennett used a class set of iPads in his classroom during the 2012-2013 school year.

Let’s Put On A Show! An Experience in Theatre Arts:
June 17-21 9:00-12:00 $200
Open to students entering the 4th-8th grades
Students will explore and experience various forms of Theatre that are age appropriate for incoming 4th-8th graders. The students will rehearse and perform in a theatrical production including puppetry, acting, singing and dancing. Daily activities will include theatre games and improv, designing a t-shirt to wear in the show, rehearsing a medley of songs from well-known musicals, rehearsing simple choreography, and rehearsing Readers Theatre, monologues and scripts. The students will get coaching on blocking, acting techniques, and vocal and facial expressions. Students will be expected to rehearse lines and songs all week to be able to perform a memorized show by Friday.
Make some new friends and experience the fun of putting on a show! For those that participated last year, this will be the same great experience with new play scripts and songs. This course will be taught by Lipscomb Academy’s Middle and High School Drama Director, Suzanne Craig, aka: MAMA CRAIG!

This course is for everyone who loves the games of summer camps and church camps and wishes there was more time to play them with friends. Participants will play such favorites as Capture the Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, Wells Fargo, plus mixer games to get to know each other. Games will be explained and supervised by camp instructor Franklin Bennett. Coach Bennett is a current teacher and coach at Lipscomb Academy and has years of experience as a camp counselor and game staff member at multiple church camps. Bring your friends as we have a great time enjoying the outdoors and each other.

This course is designed as an introduction to research for middle school students. Students will learn how to determine between primary and secondary sources as well as learn how to find and cite books, periodicals, reference sources, and internet sites. Students will also learn how to use Noodle Tools, an online research tool that can help them cite their sources, take notes, and organize their ideas. All of these skills will be used in high school and will be invaluable as students move from high school to college. At the end of the week, students will have a binder of instructional materials and their own work. This course will be taught by Lipscomb Academy High School English teacher Jennifer King.

This camp will give you a head start on developing your portfolio to your dream college. Use a hands-on approach to get ahead in understanding the basics of researching colleges and careers. Create your high school plan while learning your basic learning style and explore careers centered on your interests. You will hear from area professionals and end the week with a scavenger hunt at the university to see how well you learned to research a college campus! So You Want to Be a Song Writer

Do you have dreams of being a song writer? This camp will give you a basic hands-on approach to song writing. Learn what song writing is about and how it comes together, and then practice what you learn! At the end of the week you will have a better understanding of what a career in song writing is about, basic song writing skills, and hands on song writing experience. You may have written an entire song! End the week with a tour of a recording studio and witness a recording session in progress! This class will be taught by Lipscomb Academy Guidance Counselor, Amy Cowell, as well as established songwriters and producers, David and Jessica Dorn.

Math Enhancement for Early Middle School

The Math Review Course for Early Middle School offers a flexible schedule to make available to students individualized practice to maintain throughout the summer the math skills and knowledge they have gained during the previous school year. It also provides the opportunity for aid in areas where students need improvement, in addition to helping them become comfortable with the middle school environment and easing the transition from 4th to 5th grade or 5th to 6th grade. This class is offered alongside the Basic Math Fact Review that requires separate registration.
These opportunities have been offered for several years by Jill Knott, a teacher at Lipscomb Academy Middle School.

Basic Math Facts Review

The Basic Math Facts Review uses the same format as Math Enhancement for Early Middle School. This class is designed to work on basic mathematical facts such as addition facts or multiplication facts. This opportunity has been offered several years by Jill Knott a fifth grade teacher at Lipscomb Academy Middle School.

Lipscomb Academy Volleyball Camp

Open to students going in to the 4th-8th grades
Campers will learn all aspects of the game of volleyball while getting ample time to focus on position specific skills. The camp will be led by Coach Boatman, Lipscomb Academy’s Middle School coach and Ethos Volleyball Club coach. Each day, campers will focus on a different skill and build toward the team concepts of volleyball: transition, serve receive and defense. Sessions will be filled with competitive games, wash drills, and rally scoring games.
Writing Lab

This writing course is designed to help prepare students for the variety of writing assignments that they will encounter in high school. We will begin with creative writing and then move on to expository and persuasive writing, which are both evaluated by the ERB Writing Assessment taken by students in grades 8, 9, and 10. Students will learn how to create organized paragraphs as well as structured five-paragraph essays. Each student will end the week with a binder of instructional materials as well as a portfolio of their own work. In order to make writing more accessible, we will be using color-writing, games, and other fun activities to help students find their voices and become successful writers. This course will be beneficial to both struggling writers and those students who enjoy writing. The Writing Lab will be led by Lipscomb Academy sophomore English teacher, Jennifer King.
Service Learning

Open to students entering the 6th-9th grades
This class will focus on providing Christian service opportunities in several different settings. Students will learn what to expect in various settings as well as learn how to relate to people who are different than them. Our goals for students are to understand the true meaning of Christian service, become a blessing to our community as they serve, and enjoy serving others together. We will be going off campus to have these service experiences. Service opportunities may include visiting / working at a nursing home, hospital, church, or other organization. Rising ninth graders can use these service hours for their high school requirement. This class will be taught by Lipscomb Academy High School teachers, Jeremy and Jennifer King.

Lipscomb Academy 'Attacking and Finishing' Soccer Camp

Participants will be introduced to fundamental to advanced skills that will be essential to their success as an attacker and finisher in a game envirnonment. The camp will be held at Lipscomb Academy's high school soccer field. It will be led by high school soccer coach, Nathan Proffitt. Also, teaching at the camp will be Nicole Aquila Stephens. Nicole is a USSF 'B' licensed coach and the owner of Elite Feet Soccer Academy. The high school assistant coach Stefano Bacciochi ,(AJ) who has assisted with Lipscomb University's teams and played club soccer in Italy, will also be teaching at the camp. This camp is designed as an introductory camp for rising 5-8 graders. Campers will learn cheers, chants, proper motion technique, stretching techniques, jumps, routines to music, and beginner stunts. Each participant will also receive a cheer bow! Cheer Camp will be led by one of the Lipscomb Academy High School cheerleading coaches, Martha Ann Hawkins. Mrs. Hawkins has led the junior varsity high school cheerleading squad for eight years. She is certified by the national cheerleading association- AACCA. Current and former varsity cheerleaders will assist Mrs. Hawkins in conducting the camp.

Language Arts Workshop:

Open to students entering the 5th-6th grades
This mini-workshop will provide an overview and review of basic grammar for rising 5th and 6th graders, using the All School Read for Lipscomb Academy as a basis for instruction. The workshop will be taught by Lipscomb Acdemy Middle School teachers Lucinda Burris, Katie Holladay, Christine McNutt and Kim Woods.
Lady Mustang Softball Camp:
July 15-17 8:30-11:30 $120
Open to girls entering the 5th-9th grades
The Lady Mustang Softball Camp is designed for those players who are looking to improve or learn skills in all areas of the game. Basic level skills on hitting and defense will be taught, including mechanics of the swing, bunting, throwing, and fielding ground balls and fly balls. Proper base running and sliding technique will also be covered. The final day of camp will feature a whiffle ball tournament and a Marshmallow softball game. Campers will be divided into groups, each with a leader, so that they may receive as much individual attention as possible. Camp instructors will include Camp Director Lexi Myers (Head Softball Coach), Lipscomb Academy Softball Staff, Lipscomb Academy and Lipscomb University softball players. Campers are expected to provide their own fielder’s glove and optional equipment such as a bat and cleats. Each camper will receive a Lipscomb Academy Softball t-shirt. In the event of rain, camp will be moved into the elementary school gym.

Open to students entering the 5-12 grades
Students will learn the sport of 10-pin bowling. Topics covered are bowling etiquette, playing rules for league members, scoring, different approaches to the game, and the appropriate equipment for these approaches. Inexperienced and experienced bowlers are welcome to participate. Course will be taught by Lipscomb Academy High School Bowling coach Diana Benson and Assistant Bowling Coach Ryan Colletti.
Boat Tennessee - Boating Safety Course
June 6 8:00 am - 4:00 pm $10 (for Form 600, that must be obtained before attending the course)
Open to all students entering the 5th-8th grades
This boating safety course is a must for anyone who will be in a boat on Tennessee waters this summer. Anyone born after January 1, 1989 is required to have a license to operate a boat if they are a Tennessee resident on Tennessee waterways. The students will take a proctored test at the completion of the boating safety course to obtain their license. To take the test each student will need to obtain a Form 600 from any outlet that sells hunting and fishing licenses in Tennessee. The cost of this is $10. There will be no charge for the course itself. The course will be taught by Randy Ventress. Mr Ventress is a retired member of the Air Force who also served in the Coast Guard Auxillary for 10 years. Mr. Ventress is a qualified boat crew member and vessel examiner. He has taught boating safety courses for nine years.
