News from the Department of Mathematics

Faculty

Dr. John Beauchamp was promoted to Full Professor, effective August 2009.

Dr. Carroll Wells received one of the three awards for outstanding teachers at the University at the May 2009 graduation.

Dr. Doy Hollman attended an NSF sponsored short course, "Archaeoastronomy and Mathematics in the Maya ruins of Chiapas, Mexico: Palenque, Bonampak, and Yaxchilan."

Dr. Gary Hall led the annual mission trip to Creece and the British Isles during June and July, 2009.

Dr. Randy Bouldin is currently an Associate Proffessor of Mathematics and Associate Provost for Graduate Studies.

Dr. Gary Hall received one of the three awards given for excellence in teaching at the May, 2010 graduation.

The Department of Mathematics in conjunction with the College of Education received an Improving Teacher Quality grant for 2011.  During June, 2011 the Department will conduct a five day institute for 24 middle grades teachers from the Metro/Nashville Public Schools.

Dr. Doy Hollman gave a presentation at the History of Mathematics session of the summer Math Fest conference of the Mathematical Association of American held in Pittsburg during August, 2010.

Dr. Gary Hall, Dr. Amy Nelson, Dr. Doy Hollman, and Dr. Carroll Wells each gave presentations at the annual conference of the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers’ Association held at the University of Tennessee Martin in September, 2010.

Dr. Carroll Wells gave an invited convocation presentation at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. in April, 2010 and also did a half-day workshop for high school teachers from that area.

Two institutes for middle grades mathematics teachers and one institute for high school mathematics teachers were conducted during the summer of 2010 as part of the Math/Science Partnership Grant.  Each institute was ten days long.

The Department of Mathematics has a Math/Science Partnership Grant for the summer of 2011.  A two institute for middle grades mathematics teachers will be conducted in June, 2011.  The participants will come for Robertson County, Davidson County, Summer County, Maury County, and the Lebanon Independent Schools.

Dr. Amy Nelson, Dr. Gary Hall, and Dr. Carroll Wells will conduct a special three hour session at the annual conference of the Southeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America in April, 2011 to be held in Alabama.

 

Retired Faculty

Mr. John Holland, retired Associate Professor of Mathematics, died on June 26, 2009.

Alumni

Megan Dickerson, May 2009 math-education graduate, is enrolled in graduate school at the University of Georgia.

Rachel Doty, December 2008 math-education graduate, is teaching mathematics for Rutherford County (Murfeesboro, TN).

Meredith Thornton (’10) is teaching secondary mathematics for the Lipscomb Campus Schools.  She is engaged to be married in June, 2011 to Jay Brocklebank, Jr.

Megan Dickerson (’09) received her master’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Georgia in June, 2010 and is currently teaching secondary mathematics for  Greater Atlanta Christian Schools.

Brandon Banes (’06) received his master’s degree in mathematics from Middle Tennessee State University in May and is now in the PhD program in mathematics education at MTSU.
