Statement of Educational Effectiveness
The Hazelip School of Theology demonstrates educational effectiveness as it successfully carries out its mission to prepare followers of Jesus for leadership and service in God’s kingdom, especially the church, by providing education in Scripture, theology and history, global contextualization, and ministry skills in the framework of faith in God and formation by the Spirit. Evidence of this success is demonstrated by student responses in surveys and academic testing processes which measure knowledge, personal growth, and mastery of clinical skills required by present day ministerial leadership and service professionals.
The following results are based on information provided by 2010-2012 graduates of the Hazelip School of Theology. Self-reported personal growth items after completing the program include: 94% of our graduates felt stronger in their ability to pray and trust in God, and 100% felt stronger in self-discipline and focus, respect for other religious traditions, and self-confidence. A majority of graduates (88%) had a stronger respect for their own religious tradition.
Self-reported skills related to future work include 100% satisfaction in graduates’ ability to use and interpret Scripture, give spiritual direction, and teach well. 100% also reported satisfaction in their knowledge of church doctrine, knowledge of other traditions, knowledge of own tradition, and ability to think theologically. A majority of graduates (94%) were satisfied with their ability to lead others, ability to conduct worship, ability to relate social issues, and knowledge of Christian philosophy.
Direct measures over the past two years (2010-11, 2011-12) have yielded similar results. Based on comprehensive exams and major projects (research, sermons, presentations), 93% of students scored “very good” or “excellent” in ability to interpret the Bible. Likewise, 89% have demonstrated a very good or excellent knowledge of Christian history and theology. Additionally, 85% exhibited a very good or excellent capacity for ministerial or public leadership.
