Medication Tips for Flu Season

Taking too much Acetaminophen can be life-threatening?
Acetaminophen is found in Tylenol products and many other medications used for pain and feverl. More than 4,000 milligrams a day can cause liver failure. Early symptoms associated with the liver damager include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Because these symptoms may already by present if yo have the flu, it is especially important to monitor the amount of acetaminophen you take each day.
• 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen = 8 Extra-Strength Tylenol OR 8 Tylenol PM OR 4 dosage cups of Nyquil
• Remember most all over-the-counter products labeled to treat “flu” contain Acetaminophen
• Keep a record of the number of doses you have taken each day if you are sick so you don’t lose count and take too many
• If you think you may have taken too much of any medication, including acetaminophen, you can contact the Tennessee Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 for help.
 
To limit your intake of caffeine if you are taking decongestants?
Decongestants such as pseudoephedrine when taken with excessive amounts of caffeine can cause nausea, shakiness, insomnia and increase your heart rate and blood pressure.
 
The over-the-counter medications may interact with each other or your prescription medication?
Always tell your health care provider, including the university Health Clinic, about any medication you are taking — including over-the-counter and herbal products.
 
Driving after taking many over-the counter medications for cold, cough and flu can impair driving? Medication that cause drowsiness can lead to Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Know how you react to any medication before driving.
 
Always follow the directions on your medication including whether or not you should take with food and do not exceed the maximum recommended dose per day.

Medicines containing acetaminophen: Tylenol, Tylenol PM, Excedrin, Excedrin Body Ache, NyQuil TheraFlu, DayQuil, Robitussin, Benadryl, Mucinex, Vick’s Forumula 44D, Sudafed, Comtrex, Tylenol Sore Throat, Dimetapp, Tylenol Extra Strength, Robitussin DM, Tylenol Cold, Mucinex DM, Excedrin Tension Headache.
