Language study is required for my degree at Lipscomb. Why?

Most students arriving at college wonder why they are required to take general education classes. A common question is, “Why should I take a class that has nothing to do with my major?” You may be surprised to learn how helpful general education courses can be. Consider the reasons below:

A Liberal Arts Education teaches you how to think.
Your mind will acquire new concepts. You will be able to think and analyze information for yourself. You will gain a rational and structured way of thinking that will guide you as you make important decisions. You will learn how to consider things from various perspectives. Most importantly, you will not be threatened by ideas that are different, because you will know how to analyze and reflect with an open mind.

A Liberal arts education teaches you how to learn.
You aren’t in college to get facts and information. You can get that from the Internet. Instead, you are in college to learn how to learn. What you learn in college is designed to help you develop your own opinions, attitudes, values and beliefs. You will develop the habit of learning , which will enhance your future in numerous ways.

A Liberal arts education allows you to analyze relationships.
Henry Newman said: “an overemphasis on one field of study distorts the understanding of the reality.” You will gain wide-ranging knowledge in the fields of philosophy, sciences and language. Your diverse studies will permit you to see relationships between ideas. Thus, you can attempt to distinguish between what is true and what is not.

A Liberal arts education enhances wisdom and faith.
Knowledge will help you develop the seeds of wisdom and will help you become a better person. Knowledge also is an ally of faith because the more you learn about the creation in biology, astronomy, physics, the more you can praise the miracles God has performed. A Liberal Arts, Christian education can provide the missing elements of theological knowledge and truth and can answer questions about spirituality and identity.

A Liberal Arts education will contribute to your happiness.
A cultivated mind enjoys itself and the arts. It is always a pleasure to learn about the diversity of the world.
