English Language Learning (ELL)
Did you Know? 49% of teachers will have English Language Learners in their Classrooms...but only 12% of ALL teachers receive training related to teaching these students. What can you do?
The department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers coursework designed to prepare prospective teachers to teach English Language Learners. All students majoring in language education (Spanish, French and German) will be certified to teach ELL (English Language Learners as well (upon successful completion of coursework and Praxis texts). Education majors wishing to pursue an Endorsement in English Language Teaching need to complete the elementary language course series (in Spanish, French, or German) and the course entitled, " Introduction to Teaching Foreign and Second Languages". The other courses comprising the ELL Endorsement are offered within the College of Education. English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement:
Students seeking an initial teaching license (K-6, 4-8, K-12 or 7-12) can also seek an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement to add to the initial teaching license by successfully completing the following requirements:
1. Elementary Language Courses (I and II) French, Spanish or German.
2. Foreign Language 4514: Introduction to Teaching Foreign and Second Languages: Theory and Practice (4) Fall
3. Social Work 3113: Race and Ethnic Groups (3) F, SP (A study of the issues and challenges arising from local, national, and international racial and ethnic group relations, with special emphasis on diversity and the dynamics of discrimination within the U.S. culture.) or Education 3343(required of all Ed majors): Cultural Perspectives in Education (3)
A trip into a culturally diverse environment will be taken. Significant time will be spent in school settings. Journal writing, readings, and
a reflection paper will be assigned before, during and after the trip. Travel fee will be extra. Offering is subject to availability. May be taken
in place of Social Work 3113. Prerequisite: Admission to program.
4. Education 3623 (required of all Ed majors): Best Practices (3) F, SP
This course is designed to educate future teachers in the most effective teaching practices according to recent research. These practices
are related to technology, parent and community involvement, student motivation, instructional resources and content area instruction.
Candidates will work with exemplary educators in multiple content areas during the course. In addition, the course includes a long-term field
experience in which students work weekly in schools. This course should be taken later in Tier II. Prerequisite: Admission to program.
Praxis II Required: In addition, students seeking the ESL add-on endorsement will have to pass the ESL Praxis II exam and complete a field placement in an ESL/ELL classroom during student teaching.
