We're not here because you can't write, we're here because you do!

How do you find us?

Once you mount the front steps of the Axel Swang Center, pass through the pristine glass doors to the lofty lobby. Veer left, and follow the hallway of the sallow florescent lighting. If you must, pause at the vending machines for refreshment. Continue down the hall, and make a sharp right into the English Wing, where you will be guided by a mural of depictions of literary characters. Enter the small passageway next to the Writing Studio sign, and you will be greeted with pleasant visions of smiling consultants and comfortable seating. Congratulations; you have found the place where all of your wildest writing dreams will come true!

Mission Statement:

Our duty is to help you perfect what you already do well. The Writing Studio is not a remedial service for poor writers; rather, it is a place for you to refresh your memory of grammatical rules, get a new perspective on your writing style and content, and share your thoughts with others who want to help you succeed. Instead of editing your writings as you sit and watch, we work with you to refine and develop your ideas in an interactive process. We do not promise grades, but a new-found confidence in your own abilities. A “Writing Studio” by definition is a place of creativity, empathy, and growth, but more importantly it is a place for all writers and all types of writing.

 Policies:

Please be punctual to your appointments and understanding of time restrictions, especially when the Studio is busy. Our consulting process implies that you will participate and be attentive to errors and suggestions. Please silence your cell phone.

Make an appointment:

An appointment is not necessary, but if you would like to reserve a time slot, you may call the Studio at 615-966-5892, or you can write your name and email in the appointment book, which is kept in the main English Department Office (Swang 124) after hours.

Prepare for your session:

Make sure to bring a hard copy of your writing or bring your computer to the session. You will need the assignment sheet or prompt, as well as a writing utensil to make notes.

When you come to the Studio:
Please sign your name into a slot in the appointment book. If you are a first-time client, please fill out a blue form for our permanent records. Fill out a white Notification of Assistance form for each appointment. If you have an appointment, our consultants can work with you immediately. Walk-ins are welcome, but may have to wait for assistance if the Studio is busy.

The Writing Studio may close on Study Day and during Exam Week. Hours, if available, will be posted. The Studio will be closed on all university holidays and breaks. This schedule is subject to change without notice due to consultant availability.
