Candice McQueen, Dean of the College of Education, Associate Professor of Education B.S. (Lipscomb University), M.Ed. (Vanderbilt University), Ph.D. (The University of Texas) Dr. McQueen became dean in 2008. Since then, the College of Education has grown 72%, added multiple new graduate programs including a doctorate in education, and has become a leader in teacher preparation quality in the state. She is also the Founding Director of the Ayers Institute for Teacher Learning and Innovation that started in 2012. Dr. McQueen served as the undergraduate department chair in education before becoming dean. In addition, Dr. McQueen taught in both private and public elementary and middle schools before coming to Lipscomb. She has won multiple awards for her teaching at both the K-12 and collegiate levels. Her primary research interests are teacher professional development, education reform, leadership, and reading and writing methods. Candice and her husband Andy have two children: Abigail and Henry. Deborah Boyd, Associate Dean and Director of Graduate Studies, Associate Professor of Education B.A., M.A., Ed.S. (Middle Tennessee State University), Ed.D. (Tennessee State University) Dr. Boyd brings deep educational experience to Lipscomb, having served at the local, system and state level. Her areas of interest include curriculum, assessment, educational leadership, and effective instruction. Her research interests include teachers of ELL students and teacher effectiveness. Misty Vetter Ballew, Interim Co-Director of Masters Program, Assistant Professor of Education B.A. (Abilene Christian University), M.A. (University of Tennessee), Ed.D. (Nova Southeastern University) Dr. Ballew has dedicated her career to students with disabilities serving as both an autism consultant and administrator in public schools. B.S., M.Ed. (Freed-Hardeman University), Ed.D. (Tennessee State University) With fourteen years experience as a school administrator, Dr. Staggs's areas of expertise include educational leadership, leadership coaching as well as professional accountability and school law. In 2011, he was named a Highly Effective Principal by the Tennessee Department of Education and he recently served as a Principal Core Coach for the Tennessee Department of Education. Trace Hebert, Director of Doctoral Program, Associate Professor of Education B.S. (Abiliene Christian University), M.A. (University of Alabama), Ph.D. (Oakland University) Prior to coming to Lipscomb, Dr. Hebert served as Academic Dean of Rochester College in Michigan. He has experience working in a variety of administrative and academic positions in higher education at the director, dean, and vice president level at four different colleges and universities. Carole English, Director of Teacher Education & Assessment, Associate Professor of Education B.S., M.A. (Tennessee Technological University), Ed.D. (Vanderbilt University) Dr. English formerly served as a teacher, librarian, and principal in Metro Nashville and Williamson County Public Schools. She joined the faculty in 2010 after serving as adjunct in the M.Ed. program for several years. She and her husband Rodney have six grandchildren from ages 3-16. Junior L. High, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor of Education B.A. (Lipscomb University), M.Ed. (Middle Tennessee State University), Ed.D. (Trevecca Nazarene University) Dr. High had 31 years of experience as an elementary teacher and principal prior to coming to Lipscomb. His primary interests include school leadership and providing students with valuable experiences in student teaching preparing them for the classroom of tomorrow. Keith Nikolaus, Professor of Education B.A. (Lipscomb University), M.Ed., Ed.D. (Tennessee State University) Dr. Nikolaus has varied K-12 experience as a 6th grade teacher, a curriculum director, a study skills instructor, and, most recently, the Director of David Lipscomb Campus School. His primary educational interests include leadership studies, classroom management, learning techniques, and 21st century educational innovation and policy development. Marcia Stewart, Professor of Education B.A. (Lipscomb University), M.Ed., Ed.D. (Vanderbilt University) Dr. Stewart has taught students from preschool through fourth grade. She worked as a research assistant at Vanderbilt University, conducting research in Nashville elementary and middle schools. Carrie Thornthwaite, Manager of Educational Technologies, Professor of Education
B.A. (Wheaton College), M.Ed. (Trevecca Nazarene College), Ed.D. Roger Wiemers, Professor of Education B.A. (International Bible Seminary), M.Ed., Ed.D. (Tennessee State University) Roger was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, but he has worked all across the U.S. and in several other countries. He has taught at the graduate level for 15 years. Jim Christman, Associate Professor of Education B.S., M.Ed. Carrie Abood, Assistant Professor of Education B.A., M.Ed., Ed.D. (Lipscomb University) Prior to joining the College of Education, Dr. Abood taught journalism and English at Lipscomb Academy, as well as English as a Second Language in Metro Nashville Public Schools. Her educational areas of interest include formative assessment, teaching strategies for high school, and lesson planning. Recent research includes a qualitative study on recruitment and retention effective strategies for Latino students in higher education. Sarah Duncan, Assistant Professor of Education B.A. (Harding University), M.Ed., Ph.D. (University of Mississippi) Dr. Duncan taught reading and language arts in Mississippi and also worked as an intervention coach before coming to Lipscomb. Emily Medlock, Assistant Professor of Education B.S., M.Ed., Ed.D. (Lipscomb University) Prior to joining the College of Education faculty, Dr. Medlock taught for 13 years in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. Dr. Medlock teaches several different courses including: Middle School Learning Strategies, Classroom Management and Middle School Education,and Math Methods. Hope Nordstrom, Assistant Professor of Education B.S., M.A. (Tennessee Tech University), Ed.D. (Trevecca Nazerene University) Before joining the College of Education faculty, Dr. Nordstrom taught middle school for 10 years where she was named Harpeth Middle School’s “Distinguished Educator of the Year” for the ’08-’09 and ’10-’11 school years. Melanie Maxwell, Lead Faculty Member for Reading Specialty Program B.S.. and M.Ed. (Middle Tennessee State University) Ms. Maxwell taught for 19 years primarily in elementary school settings. She most recently served as a Literacy Coach and Academic Interventionist for grades K-6. She has also worked as an adjunct professor of reading classes at MTSU. This past summer she spent a week in Haiti working with Haitian teachers in the area of best practices in literacy instruction. She and her husband Lee have two daughters, HannahLee and MariMegan.
