Cultural Perspectives
|
Every year, the Department of Education offers a Maymester course called Cultural Perspectives in Education (ED3332). The students who enroll in this course will take a trip into a culturally diverse environment, in order to spend significant time in a school setting. Journal writing, readings, and reports are assigned before and during the trip. For several years, the students worked at Rockyford School, located on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. However, in 2010, the students traveled to Peru to work at Lima High School (Colegio Maria Alvarado).
Above, shows (l to r) Kami Osborne, Bradley Rowlett, Janey Elrod, Jenn Mahowald, Jessica Grant, Katie Holladay, and Mel Lindstrum as they worked in one of the classes. Usually the Lipscomb students worked alone in a variety of classes throughout the day. The Peruvian students adored their visiting teachers from Lipscomb.
Dr. Carrie Thornthwaite on the right is shown here with the rest of the group as they pose along the Peruvian shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. After working a week at the school, the group also took a couple days to travel to the jungle and kayak 15 miles along the Madre de Dios River. ______________________________ |
