Mullican Studios
The Department of Communication and Journalism facilities houses the Mullican Studios, a 6000 sq. ft. Communication complex housing television, radio, and online studios, control room, five multimedia production suites, a voice-over booth, and a newsroom and lab. The department also houses a fully equipped focus group room. The Mullican Studios is home to the Lumination network, the student media network of Lipscomb University (www.luminationnetwork.com). Lumination provides television, radio, print, and online opportunities for students. Communication and Journalism majors also may assist with coverage of athletic and other events through a video streaming partnership between Turner Broadcasting and universities of the NCAA Atlantic Sun Conference.
Executives & Journalists in Residence
In addition to outstanding communication and journalism faculty, several outstanding practitioners bring a depth of experience to the classroom each year through our Executives and Journalists in Residence programs. Executives-in-Residence who teach in the 2010-2011 include the president of a national public relations firm, the creative director of an international public relations firm, a former FCC Commissioner, and a veteran heal care communications executive. Journalists-in-Residence in 2010-2011 include award-winning professionals such as a veteran television anchor, a newspaper columnist and editor, and an environmental documentary filmmaker.
Special Events
Each year the department hosts days of activities with the recipients of its MediaMaster award, designed to honor an exemplary body of work in the communication or journalism fields. Pizza and Politics, co-sponsored with the Department of History, Politics, and Philosophy, showcases local and national political leaders and communicators.
Internships
Every student in the Department of Communication and Journalism is required to complete at least one internship for credit. In the last five years, students have interned in dozens of locations including, “Dateline: NBC,” E! Radio, the Golf Channel, Tennessee Titans, Titans Radio Network, CMT, WSMV-TV, New Channel5, Fox 17, 104.5 The Zone, 95.5 FM The Wolf, the City Paper, Country Music Association, Gospel Music Association, Universal Music Group, Provident Music, The Buntin Group, McNeely Pigott & Fox, Dell Corporation, Governor of Tennessee, Southern Hills Medical Center, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Youth Encouragement Services, and the Nashville Zoo.
Global Learning
Lipscomb offers a number of global learning opportunities valuable to communication and journalism majors, including programs in Vienna, Chile, China, Washington DC, and New York. Opportunities for off-campus study are also available through the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Los Angeles Film Studies Center, and the DC0based Summer Institute of Journalism programs.
Professional Organizations
Students are encouraged to join our accredited professional organizations within the department: The Broadcast Education Association, the Public Relations Student Society of America, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
