Information Security

Students enrolled in the Information Security major will find themselves in high demand as the security of data/information has never been more critical and the need will continue to grow. Everyday businesses, websites and government entities lose valuable data to unscrupulous hackers who steal data and sell it to the highest bidder. This is happening at every level of business and government. Organizations are desperate to make sure their data is secure. Student will learn how to check for holes in their employers’ networks and then secure them against malicious attacks.

ISEC 3113 Fundamentals of Information Security Management (3) F
Students will be introduced to the management of Information Security. They will be taught the importance of securing Information, the basics of identifying security risks, mitigating damage and setting up an information security plan and policy among other topics. Lecture. Prerequisite: Computer Science 1513 with a minimum grade of “C.” Lecture, 3 hours.
ISEC 3133 Introduction to Policy and Procedures (3) F, SP
This course will introduce the student to the necessity of forming an Information Security Policy and Procedures program within the organization. The student will learn why a Policy and Procedures program is important, how to write policy and procedures manuals and how to implement the policies procedures. Co-requisite Information Security 3133. Lecture, 3 hours
 
ISEC 395V Internship in Information Security (1-3) F, SP, SU
Provides the opportunity to gain experience with information security in a work setting. Credit is awarded according to the scale published by the Career Development Center. Prerequisites: Junior standing and permission of the department chair. Repeatable up to six hours.
 
ISEC 4153 Introduction to Business Continuity and Recovery Planning (3) F
Students will be introduced to the concepts of how to plan for and recover from an Information Security breach or from a disaster of some type. In recent years natural disasters, terrorist attacks and malicious hacking have all led to the loss of enormous amounts of data from organizations and government alike. This course will show how to plan for and recover from such data loss and how to maintain a business posture in the face of data loss and how to mitigate damages from the loss. Prerequisite: Information Security 3113. Lecture, 3 hours
 
ISEC 4163 Senior Seminar in Information Security (3) SP
This course is intended to give the student practical knowledge of the concepts of the importance of having a policy and procedures program; how to implement, manage, and maintain that program. Other topics such as assessing the risk of an attack on the organization’s data, how to recover from an attack or from data loss, how to mitigate damages, how to continue business practices in light of data loss, as well as others will be taught by industry personnel. Prerequisites: Senior standing and 15 hours of Information Security and/or Computer Science major courses. Lecture, 3 hours
 
ISEC 4193 Ten Day Travel Course in Informational Security (Optional)
The travel course is designed to give students insights into various organizations’ operations and how they handle the several aspects of Information Security. Students will observe the Security of the Physical Plant, how Human Resources protects data by making informed hiring decisions, how data is secured as well as networks and communications. NOTE: This course is offered during Wintermester and is offered on demand at additional cost. If chosen ISEC 4193 will replace ISEC 4163. Prerequisites:  Senior standing and 15 hours of Information Security and/or Computer Science major courses. Travel, 3 hours.
