Accounting & Finance

Accounting & Finance Concentration

Accounting has been a central part of the Lipscomb MBA program since its inception in 1999. In fact, Lipscomb has been Middle-Tennessee’s accounting program of choice for over 50 years. Known as a leader in accounting education for more than half a century, Lipscomb’s accounting curriculum continues to impart a broad base of relevant knowledge and experience to prepare professionals to serve as effective advisors in today’s volatile and rapidly changing financial climate. Lipscomb alumni currently serve as corporate leaders and partners in a wide range of entities across the country and around the world.

Critical competencies and skills are developed through teamwork and interactive class discussions, while internships provide additional opportunities to practice skills and knowledge in professional work environments. Now, MBA students can pursue the accounting/finance concentration at Lipscomb, which provides the right balance of technical skill, business core training and current issues instruction.

Did you know?

  • Lipscomb's graduate accounting classes are taught by either full-time faculty members who are all active CPAs or adjuncts with significant experience in their subject area.
  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as the level of investment activity increases, overall employment of financial analysts is expected to increase by 20 % during the 2008–18 decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
  • Lipscomb finance students at the graduate and undergraduate level are positioned among the best and brightest financial managers in the country as they compete annually in the TVA Investment Challenge. Over the last several years, Lipscomb’s TVA investment team has placed first or second in the country, competing with teams from Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and neighboring Belmont University.

Demand for Lipscomb's accounting students remains strong, with 100% job placement within one month of graduation for the past three years. Opportunities exist in these markets:

  • Public accounting, at both the Big Four, regional, and local firm level
  • Industry, in tax, internal audit, or financial reporting departments
  • Government, in audit, tax, or accounting departments

Concentration Coursework

The Tennessee State Board of Accountancy requires CPA exam candidates to complete 150 hours of education, with specific requirements in both accounting (30 hours) and business (24 hours). Interested students should seek specific advising from Lipscomb’s department of accounting to plan a schedule, which enables the student to meet all state board requirements.

  • MBA/PMBA students pursuing this concentration must take three of the following courses, which are also offered as part of Lipscomb’s Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program:

Concentration Coursework

BU 6303 Health Services Management
This course will expose students to a range of operational health care topics to include leadership, organizational behavior, strategy, and process improvement. The reference material used in the class will mostly be from primary sources such as executive interviews, case studies, and guest lecturers.

BU 6313 Contemporary Issues in Healthcare
This is an issues-oriented course that will provide the student with a broad background of information on current issues emerging and impacting the health care industry. Topics will include key trends and regulatory conditions confronting health care today from a policy, management, technology, and reform perspective. The topics will vary from semester to semester depending upon which issues are dominating the health care landscape at the time, or seen to be imminent for legislative renewal or reform. Awareness levels of students will be enhanced through classroom participation, presentations, projects and guest lecturers. Prerequisites: BU 6323 - The U.S. Healthcare System

BU 6323 The U.S. Health Care System
This course will identify and examine the various services and organizations that impact the current health care delivery system in the United States. The class focuses on gaining an understanding of how these varying organizations and services come together to create the health community of the U.S. while also challenging students to creatively assess ways the system can be changed and improved to enhance health care service delivery. Through study, research and experimental learning students will learn how the various components of the U.S. health care system functions and what professional opportunities may be available for students to pursue in the future. Prerequisites: None.

Leadership

Leadership Concentration

Today’s business culture is in need of leaders who model integrity, competency, and ethics. Lipscomb’s MBA program has been producing just such a leader from its inception in 1999. Leadership is consistently the most popular focus of both our MBA and PMBA students.

Lipscomb’s approach to leadership is modeled after servant leadership. The leadership concentration is intentionally designed to incorporate ethics and values so a student is able to learn to identify and cultivate a values-based business environment. Leadership is built on the principle of doing the right thing.

In today’s complex and global business environment, leaders need to be able to utilize all of an organization’s resources to gain and sustain a competitive advantage. The leadership concentration prepares students to think systemically about aligning an organization’s strategy, goals and objectives with its mission, vision and values.

Offered at both the Cool Springs location (Spark) and the main campus, the leadership concentration curriculum is engaging, interactive, and integrates both knowledge and skills. Instructors in the program are not only academically qualified to facilitate a great learning experience, but also have years of organizational and business leadership experience. Faculty members have held titles such as Regional Director, Director of Human Resources, and CEO, and have worked for General Motors, the U.S. Army, The Tennessean and the U.S. Air Force. Students often comment on how the experience of the professors has helped them to understand the application of practical solutions to business issues.

Concentration Coursework

MHR 6023 Organizational Development
This course addresses the fundamental concepts of organizational development. Students are exposed to both theoretical and practical information that is very critical when altering work processes, organizational culture, and large-scale systems. Projects and case studies provide students hands-on experience designing, implementing, and analyzing assessment tools in the work environment. Additionally, students learn how to develop and successfully integrate strategic organizational change initiatives.

BU 6503 Leading Teams and Groups in Organizations
Teams and work groups have become a design and structural choice of organizations as a response to performance pressures for speed, cost, quality, and innovation. This course is a study designed to examine models, concepts, art, and science of how teams work in organizations. The problems of team development in bureaucratic and matrix organizations will be reviewed. The course will provide guidelines and principles for designing team-based organizations. The class will be organized into teams and use cases to examine issues of organizational structures, systems, processes, culture, and strategies. Current best practices books will be reviewed and shared.

ICM 5013 Negotiation and Settlement Processes
This course is designed to offer a basic experiential introduction to the concepts, instruments, functions, and theories of modern negotiation. The purpose of this introduction is to give you some of the information needed to better understand the basic dynamics of interpersonal, business and legally related negotiation.
