The gathering of musicians in Lipscomb’s Collins Alumni Auditorium Thursday, Feb. 11 was a unique collection — and a reunion of sorts — of some of music’s most influential performers.
They came to participate in Lipscomb’s inaugural Music from the Mountain concert, this year honoring Mother Maybelle Carter of The Carter Family, a group that was prominent in the history of bluegrass and country music. At the concert, Lipscomb officials announced the naming of the stage the Maybelle Carter Memorial Stage in honor of Mother Maybelle.
Maybelle, Sara and A.P. Carter were the original members of The Carter Family, known as one of the most influential groups in country music history. The Carter Family sang a pure, simple harmony that influenced not only the numerous other family groups of the '30s and the '40s, but folk, bluegrass, and rock musicians for decades, including Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe, the Kingston Trio, Doc Watson, Bob Dylan, and Emmylou Harris
John Carter and his wife Laura Cash partnered with Lipscomb University to develop this benefit concert to honor the generous spirit and musical legacy of Mother Maybelle Carter. Dale Jett, also a descendant of the original The Carter Family, completes The Carter Family III which performed at this special concert. The Whites, Heather Berry, the Gatlin Brothers, Earl Scruggs, the Del McCoury Band, Tom T. & Dixie Hall and Curley Seckler also took to the Maybelle Carter Memorial Stage.
Proceeds from the concert benefited the Nashville Rescue Misson.
