A Lipscomb Academy graduate, Zach Rogers, has signed with the New York Jets for the 2013-2014 season. Rogers, a 2009 graduate, was a three-sport athletic standout throughout his high school career.
As a football player, Rogers wore the number 21 and played safety and wingback for the Mustangs. During his freshman year, 2005, the football team ended a
very successful season as runner-up in the State Championship with a 13-2 season record. In 2006, the team repeated as state runner-up. In 2007, Rogers helped the football team win the TSSAA Division 1 Class 3A State Championship, the Mustangs finished the season with a 14-1 record.
In 2008, Rogers was named the Class 3A Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Back of the Year. During his high school career he was also twice named All-State by the Tennessee Football Coaches and Tennessee Sports Writers associations, was Region 5-3A Player of the Year, and earned Middle Tennessee's National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award as a senior.
“I was extremely blessed to have been able to attend Lipscomb and play for such an incredible coaching staff. They were not just my coaches, but also mentors and followers of Christ,” said Rogers.
Rogers also ran track for Lipscomb Academy for three years during his high school career. In 2008, the boys track team won the TSSAA Division 1 A-AA State Championship with the help of Rogers who won individual state championships in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and the long jump. He was also a member 2008 state championship 4x200 meter relay team. In 2009, Rogers returned to track to claim the individual long jump state championship title. He still holds the Lipscomb Academy record in the long jump, triple jump, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and was a member of the record holding 4x200 meter relay team.
In addition to football and track, Rogers also played third base for the baseball team for three years. Lipscomb Academy Head Baseball Coach Ernie Smith said “Zach is probably the fastest player we have ever had, he was a blur running the bases. Any time he hit the ball on the ground he had a chance to beat it out.”
“Zach Rogers is one of the finest athletes to ever graduate from Lipscomb Academy. Beyond athletics he is also a young man of character. His success does not surprise any of his former coaches or teachers based on his talent and work ethic,” said Lipscomb Academy Athletic Director, Mike Roller.
Rogers earned a football scholarship to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he played his first year as a Tennessee Volunteer in the fall of 2009. He played wide receiver where he posted impressive statistics. In his freshman season, Rogers recorded three receptions and 19 receiving yards. In his sophomore season, he had 14 receptions, 207 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. In his junior year, he recorded 14 receptions, 189 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. His senior season boasted a career-high 32 receptions, career-high 491 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns.
As a scholar, Rogers was selected for the 2009 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, 2010 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, 2010 Academic All-SEC Team and 2011 Academic All-SEC Team.
On April 27, 2013, after a successful college football career, Rogers signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent following the 2013 NFL Draft.
“The most fun I have ever had playing football was in the purple and gold. I will always remember my time there (at Lipscomb) and be thankful for the opportunity to play for Coach Mac under the lights on Friday nights. I was taught so many life lessons during my time at Lipscomb that have shaped me into the man I am today. I will forever be appreciative of the impact the Lipscomb experience had on me. I will forever be a part of the brotherhood, Mustangs win every time,” said Rogers.
On July 20, Rogers married Ellen Ross, a 2008 Lipscomb Academy graduate and his high school sweetheart.
