Coach Mac Honored at First Home Football Game
Lipscomb Academy honored the late Coach Glenn McCadams on Friday, August 23 at the first home football game of the season.
For the first time in more than 30 years, the Mustangs took the field without McCadams who passed away in March after a short illness.
An estimated crowd of more than 4,000 was in attendance to watch Head Coach Scott Tillman lead the team to a 60-42 victory over the Page Patriots. The
Mustangs scored a total of seven touchdowns and had 524 rushing yards for the game.
“Coach Mac would be upset at me for giving up so many points,” said Tillman.
After the game, Lipscomb Academy remembered the legacy of Coach Glenn McCadams, legendary football coach of the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs, with a program to honor “Coach Mac,” his former players and the McCadams family.
Jerry Cover, a Lipscomb Board Member, presented Tennessee Senate Joint Resolution 443.
“The legend of Coach Mac also lies beyond the statistics of football, as he built a program that excelled in producing winning teams by developing players whose grit and tenacity matched their coach – he respected and supported them and they in turn were deeply loyal to him, playing their hearts out every game..,” states the resolution.
Under McCadams’ leadership, the Mustangs won three state championships. In 2008, McCadams was named the State of Tennessee High School Football Coach of the Year. His total career wins ranked him among the leaders statewide for the most number of wins among active head coaches as well as all-time most number of victories for a head coach.
“The football game Friday night was a special moment for Lipscomb Academy. It was wonderful to see so many people take time to honor Coach Mac and the entire McCadams family. It was also exciting to see the current Mustang football team take a gigantic step towards what promises to be a successful future,” said Mike Roller, Lipscomb Academy Athletic Director.
The evening also served as Lipscomb Academy’s 2013 Alumni Night. Alumni of the Academy were welcomed back to campus to catch up with classmates at a half-time reception and celebrate the beginning of the 2013 season.
