Athletic Scholarships Signed

Five Lipscomb Academy seniors signed athletic scholarships on Feb. 6, 2013 in Lipscomb Academy’s Acuff Chapel.

These five athletes, Barbara Lee Ball, Abbey McMurray, Abby Taylor, Corley Webb, and David Austin Lowery signed scholarships in three different sports to three different colleges and universities across the state of Tennessee. Only two percent of high school athletes nationwide sign collegiate athletic scholarships.

Three of the athletes, Barbara Lee Ball, Corley Webb and David Austin Lowery signed cross country scholarships.

Ball, who is a three-time TSSAA Division 1 AA Cross Country State Champion, a four-time TSSAA Division 1 AA Track State Champion, a two-time Tennessean Runner of the Year and the 2012-2013 Gatorade Tennessee Girls Cross Country Runner of the year, signed a cross country Scholarship with Lipscomb University.

Corley Webb, who placed fourth in the 2012 TSSAA Division 1 AA Cross Country State Meet and holds the Lipscomb Academy record for a 5K, signed a cross country scholarship with Trevecca Nazarene University.

David Austin Lowery, who placed eighth in the 2012 TSSAA Division 1 AA Cross Country State Meet signed a cross country scholarship with Lipscomb University.

“I can not imagine better leadership than I had from this year's senior class and a large part of that leadership came from Barbara Ball, David Lowery, and Corley Webb.  These three runners gave their all consistently throughout the season.  They showed incredible improvement throughout their high school careers and finished on top with an outstanding senior season.  However, more than their skills as runners, these three were at the top of their game as far as service to their fellow runners, team spirit, and respect to coaches.  They were all incredibly easy to coach and work with and I will miss them immensely.  Most of all, they all showed dedication and service to God, and blessed the team and myself with their example.  I wish all three of them God's blessings as they continue to serve Him and demonstrate his love with their leadership,” said Lipscomb Academy Head Cross Country Coach, Albert Thweatt.

Abbey McMurray has been on the Lipscomb Academy high school track team for four years and is a sprinter and a jumper. She was a member of the 2012 TSSAA Division 1 AA State Runner-Up 4x100 meter relay team that broke the Lipscomb Academy school record for that event. She also runs the open 100 meter and 200 meter. McMurray signed a track scholarship with Lipscomb University.

Abby Taylor is a Lipscomb Academy Girl’s Soccer Team Captain and has been named TSSAA Division 1 Class AA All District, All Region and also All Tournament at the Ladies City Tournament. She is first on Lipscomb Academy’s all time career assists record and second in career scoring goals. Taylor signed a soccer scholarship with Union University.

“All five of these student athletes represent Lipscomb Academy in an outstanding fashion. Barbara Lee, David Austin, Corley, Abby Taylor and Abbey McMurray are not only wonderful athletes but leaders in our school as well,” said Dr. Mike Roller, Lipscomb Academy Associate Headmaster for Athletics and Student Life.
