The first Lipscomb Academy football game is still a month away, but that hasn’t stopped two Mustang seniors from being named preseason all-state players.
Murphy Fair’s highly respected and recently released Tennessee High School Football Guide named tight end Jackson Mitchell and defensive back Will Temple to its preseason all-state lineup.
“Jackson and Will both had a tremendous presence for us in 2013, bringing tenacity, discipline and leadership to our team,” said Lipscomb Academy Head Football Coach Scott Tillman. “Entering their senior years, I look forward to seeing them build upon their success in 2014 and be leaders for Christ on the field.”
Mitchell, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound tight end and defensive end, enters the season as one of the Mustangs biggest two-way threats. As a defender is 2013, he notched 43 tackles and 10 sacks and also made many contributions as a pass catcher and blocker on offense.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by Murphy Fair’s, but what’s more important is that the team is extremely focused and united,” Mitchell said. “We’re seeing great development from our younger players, and I can’t wait to see what kind of run we make this season.”
Temple, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound defensive back, was all over the field in 2013. He was credited with 56 tackles, two interceptions, one sack and six tackles for a loss on defense. On offense, he recorded 118 rushing yards and 216 return yards in addition to two touchdowns.
“I appreciate the recognition of this award but am most looking forward to the upcoming season,” said Temple. “We’ve been working hard all offseason and can’t wait to see that work pay off on the field this fall.”
The Mustangs kickoff their season at Page High School on Aug. 22 and play their first home game against Greenbrier on Aug. 29. The team looks to improve on its 8-3 record in 2014 under Coach Scott Tillman.
