Lipscomb Academy 2014 Art Event sets school record

Lipscomb Academy hosted one of the most successful art shows in its history Feb. 7-9, with $210,000 in gross sales, an increase of more than $33,000 over previous records.
Proceeds will benefit the Lipscomb Academy Annual Fund, which provides additional resources for programs and facilities for Lipscomb Academy. Sponsors for The Art Event included Glover Group Entertainment, Pollock Printing and Lipscomb University.
More than 50 local and regional artists offered their work for sale during the three-day show. Of those artists, more than 20 were new to the event.
Maryland artist Rick Casali was this year’s featured artist. In addition, on Feb. 15 a few days after The Art Event, Casali held a workshop in sculpture for upper level art and painting students at the academy as part of the academy’s guest artist program. Nationally acclaimed portrait artist and Lipscomb Academy parent Michael Shane Neal also participated in the workshop.
Casals’s work expresses his appreciation for nature and his love of the figure. Whether painting one's portrait in oils or sculpting the figure in clay, Casali keeps his artistic principles streamlined.
Casali is an alumnus of the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. From 2004 to 2007, he maintained a close apprenticeship with renowned portrait artists Cedric and Joanette Egeli at their farm in Edgewater, Md. Casali has also studied extensively with sculptor Stephen Perkins, an expert in human construction and anatomy. Additional mentors include colorist George T. Thurmond and internationally acclaimed portrait artist Michael Shane Neal, a 1991 Lipscomb University graduate and parent of two Lipscomb Academy students.
