Loren Cagle, a standout senior point guard for Lipscomb Academy’s basketball team signed a scholarship with Lipscomb University, a Division I university, on November 13.

Cagle broke into the Mustang’s starting lineup as a freshman and has had a significant impact on the program.  As a freshman she played wing and helped the Mustangs advance to the state tournament in 2011 after scoring the game-winning shot in the TSSAA Region 5-AA Tournament with seconds left on the clock to put the Mustangs in the lead.

The team advanced to the region semi-finals in both her sophomore and junior seasons.

Cagle became a member of the “1,000 Point Club,” a player who has scored 1,000 points during his or her high school career, during her junior season in 2013 and was named the Mustang’s Most Valuable Player the same year. She also averaged 14.3 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals per game in the same season and was named to the TSSAA District 10-AA All-District Team, All-District Tournament Team and All-Region Team for Region 5-AA.

Less than two percent of high school athletes go on to compete at the collegiate level, even fewer go on to play in a NCAA Division I program.

“Loren is obviously a good athlete, but she is also a good person. She is humble, very coachable and a good teammate,” said Lipscomb Academy Head Girl’s Basketball Coach, Ernie Smith.

Cagle also ran in the TSSAA Division 1 A-AA Cross Country Meet on November 2, the team placed ninth in the state.
