The Lipscomb Academy boy’s golf team won the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Region 5 A-AA Tournament on September 23. The team shot 299, 47 strokes fewer than the nearest competitor.
The team earned three of the top four best scores in the tournament led by first place medalist Dawson Armstrong, a senior, with a score of 69. His brother, Davis Armstrong, a sophomore, shot 70 and earned the second place medal. The fourth place medalist was Seth Sabin, a senior who shot a 78. The Mustangs have advanced to the state tournament to be played on October 1 and 2 at Willowbrook Golf Course.
The girl’s golf team finished a successful season culminating in the region tournament. Maryalice Armstrong, a freshman, and Carley Mitchell, an eighth-grade athlete, both had their best nine holes of the season on the front side at Champions Run.
“This was quite an accomplishment considering the stakes,” said Lipscomb Academy Head Golf Coach, Mike Mays.
Armstrong fell just two strokes short of advancing to the state tournament as an individual.
“With only the winning team advancing to state, the region tournament is pressure packed. Our team responded by having one of their best rounds of the year. We are looking forward to competing in the state tournament with the best competition in our division,” said Mays.
