Saint Thomas Health Services Nursing Advantage Scholarships
Tennessee is experiencing significant growth in its Hispanic/Latino community. Saint Thomas Health Services is to be commended for its response to health care challenges faced by the Hispanic/Latino population, including the establishment of clinics targeted specificallly for Hispanic/Latino patients in the Nashville and MiddleTennessee region. These facilities illuminate the nurse-procurement burden: more nurses are needed as the nursing shortage begins to affect Tennessee health-care facilities, but significantly more Hispanic/Latino nurses are needed.
Lipscomb University views this as an opportunity to make a difference - to support the multicultural environment of Middle Tennessee and beyond and serve families who are actively a part of our society. By partnering with other area-wide resources and partners - learning centers, multicultural ministries, civic efforts, healthcare centers - the University believes it can leave an impact on improving the quality of life for this underserved population, thus adding value to our community.
Saint Thomas Health Services Nursing Advantage Scholarships are now being offered to Hispanic/Latino students who have the dream of making nursing their career. These scholarships are to be offered to five students each year who will be freshmen in 2011. The recipients will be awarded the first year based on the criteria of 3.0 GPA and a minimum ACT score of 21. To renew the scholarship each year over the four-year program, the student must have a 3.0 GPA. Applicants are required to complete a Saint Thomas Health Services Nursing Advantage Scholarship application form by January 15 of the year the student would be entering as a freshman in the fall semester. Applications can be obtained in the Admissions Office of Lipscomb University.
Heather Knox Barber Nursing Scholarship
The Heather Knox Barber Nursing Scholarship is established in memory of Heather Knox Barber, a graduate of the Harding University School of Nursing, who utilized her professional skills and demonstrated her Christ-like concern for others by participating in medical missions to Nigeria and Guyana. Prior to her untimely death in 1999 at age 27 following an automobile accident, Heather Barber was a pediatric nurse at the Children's Hospital in Birmingham, AL, and a pediatric home health care nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL.
The Heather Knox Barber Nursing Scholarship is awarded every other year. To qualify for financial aid from the Heather Knox Barber Nursing Scholarship, applicants must be enrolled full-time in good standing in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Lipscomb University, and be scheduled to enter the junior year of studies. Applicants must be committed to participate in a Health Talents medical mission during each year they receive the Heather Nursing Scholarship. As a general guideline, preference is given to those applicants who, having met the academic requirements above, and following assessment of financial need by the University's Financial Aid Office, must incur loans equal to one-half or more of the cost of attendance to continue to attend the University. Applications can be obtained in the Financial Aid Office of Lipscomb University.
